ORCHESTRA -
UCLA Philharmonia is the flagship orchestra of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and is recognized as one of the finest training orchestras in Southern CA. The orchestra will include current UCLA students and alumni.
This unique workshop addressed the challenges of conducting Beethoven’s orchestral music. Each day began with presentations from William Kinderman. Participants had read his recent study, Beethoven: A Political Artist in Revolutionary Times before the workshop.
Selected conductors received generous podium time in rehearsal and performance of selected movements and works, including:
Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto
Violin Concerto
Second, Fourth, and Fifth Symphonies
Leonore Overture No. 3
The workshop faculty’s guidance led to a public performance where participants demonstrated their insight in realizing the compositions. In this workshop, practical mastery was blended with awareness of the cultural values of Beethoven’s legacy. The inclusion of the Fifth Symphony and Leonore Overture No. 3 provided a context for engagement with the dramatic and political implications of this music.
